Date Day

Hubby and I seldomly get time to ourselves these days to go on dates, so when we do, we make the most of it! Hubby doesn’t go back to work until the 5th January but my son’s daycare was open on one of his dedicated daycare days this week, so we decided to make use of that…after all we pay our daycare fees and had done plenty of activities as a family over the christmas / new years break.

So now that we had a free day, we didn’t know what to do with ourselves! We soon worked it out. The itinerary would consist of:
1. Breakfast at Nantucket Charcoal Kitchen and Bar – have been wanting to try out that place for a while
2. Seeing Big Hero 6 (the latest Disney movie)
3. Having a belated lunch at the Balfour Kitchen, within the Spicers Balfour Hotel in New Farm

Nantucket Charcoal Kitchen and Bar Review

The Nantucket Charcoal Kitchen and Bar sits amongst Indooroopilly Shopping Centre’s new shop frontage, on Station Road. Tucked away in the corner next to Nitrogenie, it opens daily for breakfast from 8:30am.

When you walk in its doors, you will immediately notice its modern decor, which seems to be a mix between French provincial and rustic American design. In saying that, it is quite elegant and seems to work well together.

We were the first customers of the day to the restaraunt and greeted promptly by the wait staff. Complimentary water was offered and refilled during our time at the restaurant. The breakfast menu was exciting and offered items such as roasted swiss browns on sourdough, bircher museli and poppy seed bagels with scrambled eggs, bacon, fresh tomato, brie and avocado. Hubby and I both ordered the bagel and were quite satisfied with the portion size. We thought we received both quality and quantity.

The only negatives to our meal were the burnt coffees and the lack of poppy seeds on our bagels (there were no poppy seeds, which luckily happens to be the way we like our bagels). Had we really wanted poppy seeds, we would have been disappointed.

Overall, hubby and I were really impressed with the Nantucket Charcoal Kitchen and Bar for breakfast and would happily recommend it to friends.

Big Hero 6 Review

Big Hero 6 is another great movie brought to you by Disney, which also features a cute short about a dog and its owner before the start to the feature movie.

Hubby and I went and saw this movie because its session times worked well for us on the day and we had heard good things about the film from other family members. Admittedly, the film is a bit sad and I was glad to see it had a PG rating but it was also a great Disney story featuring a special bond between a boy and his inflatable robot, Baymax.

The movie encompasses themes such as sadness, family, revenge and friends. It is a bit dark in areas of the movie and ideal for children a bit older (e.g. 10 years plus), who can understand the concept of mortality and adults who love a good Disney movie.

You can watch the official trailer to the movie here:

The Balfour Kitchen Review

Situated on Balfour Street, New Farm (just off Brunswick Street), the Balfour Kitchen is a hidden gem that you could easily miss driving, if you weren’t aware of the hotel. I thought I’d take this opportunity to make you aware of it :).

We became aware of the hotel when friends told us about it and my husband received a gift certificate to the Balfour Kitchen for his birthday last year. It has taken us close to three months to use the gift certificate but I’m so glad we could find time to visit and enjoy it.

The entrance to the restaurant is a bit confusing upon arrival, as the menu is posted downstairs outside an open gate to the restaurant, where there seemed to be no wait staff. We had to work out that we needed to go into the hotel and up the internal staircase to get to the restaurant entrance.

We chose to sit inside but the restaurant does also have a nice verandah and downstairs, outdoor area. At 34 weeks pregnant, the restaurant was very accomodating in answering all my food-related questions. I ordered the Tiger prawn salad, mixed leaves, mango chili, avocado and lime mousse for lunch and hubby got the Lamb fillet, spinach and coriander puree, mint labna, sweet potato chips. Both meals were delicious but hubby was left wanting a little more from his plate.

The restaurant was a little busy, so we had to wait a while for something sweet but the friendly wait staff did let us know about the delay, which I appreciated. I had the sheep milk pannacotta, cardamom caramel and mandarin sorbet for dessert and hubby tried the white chocolate and pistachio brownie with yoghurt parfait. Once again, both were amazing!

I would definitely recommend trying the Balfour Kitchen with friends, family or a loved one…just remember the entrance to the restaurant is upstairs but you can exit out the back once finished.

Halloween on a Budget

Every year we get cute little trick or treaters coming to our door and even though I was heading out to a party last night, I thought I’d better be prepared regardless. There were a couple hours in between me getting home and going out last night and that’s when the trick or treaters tend to come to my door.

Halloween
I am on a limited budget at the moment but I still wanted to give my trick or treaters something special, so I came up with a plan. I purchased name brand lollies from my local supermarket the night before Halloween and used some of the snap lock bags I had at home to create Halloween bags. No one wants lollies straight out of a jar or from your hands but when you put them in a ‘lolly bag’, it doesn’t seem to be an issue.

I didn’t put too many lollies in each bag either, as I knew their Halloween collection bags would be pretty full with lollies and chocolate by the end of the night.

It’s Garage Sale Trail Time

GarageSaleTrail
Today marks the 4th ever Garage Sale Trail.

The “Garage Sale Trail is a national program that’s about sustainability, community, commerce and fun!” By holding garage sales on the same day, in the same areas, the program aims to reduce waste and promote reuse and recycling amongst the community. As an avid op shopper, I think this is a great idea.

My son and I ventured out (without hubby this morning) to a few of the sales listed on their website https://www.garagesaletrail.com.au . I was particularly looking for some second hand, gender neutral baby clothes, seeing as we’re not finding out what we’re having. The great thing about the program’s website, is that you can search certain areas and read about what items will be at each garage sale. This helps narrow your choices and plan your attack before heading out.

I’m happy to note that I did find a cute newborn outfit and a few t-shirts for my son at one couple’s highly organised sale.

If you’re only reading this article now and are based in Australia, there’s still time to get to the sales today. Just visit the website listed above and ensure you check out the times that each sale closes. Happy shopping!
